Fun and Learning After School
The most difficult part of having small children is to constantly keep them occupied and engaged in some activities. Parents often consider after school programs to keep their tiny tots busy for at least a few hours.

Usually there are three categories of after school activities namely recreational, educational and society-oriented. The society-oriented activities are for a bit older children who are capable of telling their likes and dislikes.

Observing these three categories show some interesting features. The category of educational activities can play a vital role. These activities are basically meant to enhance the knowledge of the little children. These activities aim to improve the child’s general knowledge, his ability and level to comprehend and his memory. This is done through various techniques that will help him improve one or all of these skills. The widely popular educational activities include intensive memory training and speed mathematics. The educational activities go beyond the normal academic programs. They teach the children so many things which they would not learn in their daily school schedule of homework and class work. Such educational activities are the best alternatives for children, especially if they are lagging behind in their schools.

Then there is the category of recreational activities. These activities are the ones which children enjoy the most. They include sports and games, fine arts, painting etc. Parents enroll their children to these activities mainly to provide them a great source of enjoyment while incorporating some special skills.  The main thrust here is to have fun. The level becomes tougher with every passing day. These forms of activities certainly have a better response from the children. They develop the overall personality of the children.

Between the two categories, the recreational activities are undoubtedly a better option than the educational activities. The educational programs are a bit dull, monotonous and often lack the excitement that appeals to the children. It may not be a good option to have such programs after school hours as the child can get tired and not have the enthusiasm of learning anything more. He may get frustrated and get burnout. Unless children do not have the urge of learning new things from within and not curious enough, they would not be willing to learn.

This is where recreational activities play such a crucial role. They are a great alternative to the boring educational activities. They provide that much needed break from the ordeal of learning and studies. Extra-curricular activities like sports allow the children to overcome obstacles and become physically stronger in the most enjoyable way. Such activities refresh the tired minds and bodies of the young children. Activities like team sports and group games teach the children important traits like teamwork, discipline and perseverance. Children who are involved in recreational activities on a regular basis show a better performance in their academic life too. In fact, recreational activities have the ability to teach the children a lot more than what the educational programs can otherwise teach.

It is very important that parents regularly evaluate the performance of their children in all the fields. If the parents observe that the child’s progress is not up to the mark by following a particular program, they must provide him with another kind of program alternatives. The best option is to ask the child his opinion about the kind of programs that he would prefer. It is obvious that, programs that combine the educational with the recreational are the best. This way, children can have fun while they learn.
